Photographing marine wildlife underwater: what no manual ever teaches you

There is a photo every diver with a camera knows. The one that didn't happen.
The shark that passed two metres away and the focus went to the coral behind it.
The turtle that stayed still for exactly the time you were reframing.
The jack school that formed the perfect tornado just when you ran out of flash charge. The manta that approached head-on the moment you lowered the camera.
Marine wildlife doesn't wait. It doesn't repeat the scene. It doesn't give you a second chance for arriving late to the right position.
And the difference between the photographer who captures those images and the one who remembers them without a photo is not the equipment. It's something that underwater photography manuals rarely explain: the ability to anticipate what the animal is going to do before it does it.
I have spent thousands of dives photographing marine wildlife in every type of water. And what has taught me the most wasn't any photography manual — it was observing animals.
This guide is that knowledge distilled. No brands, no advertising — just what genuinely works.
The fundamental mistake: photographing what you see instead of what's about to happen
Most underwater photographers — beginners and experienced ones alike — make the same fundamental mistake: they react instead of anticipate.
They see the animal. They raise the camera. They try to frame. They shoot. And by the time all of that has happened, the animal has changed position, direction or behaviour.
The underwater wildlife photographer who consistently gets strong images is not responding to what is happening — they are prepared for what is about to happen. The camera is already in the right position before the animal enters the frame. They already know which direction it's going to move. They already have approximate focus calibrated. They already have the correct exposure for that depth and that light.
That anticipation doesn't come from equipment. It comes from understanding how animals behave.
Reading behaviour before shooting
The signals an animal gives before it moves
Every species has behavioural signals that predict its next movement. Learning to read them is the difference between being in position or arriving too late.
Turtles: when a turtle is resting on the bottom or on a reef, its body position tells you how long it's going to stay. If the flippers are flat and relaxed, it intends to remain. If it starts gently moving its rear flippers, within 10-15 seconds it's going to ascend to breathe — that ascent is one of the most photogenic moments that exists: the turtle with the bright surface above and the reef below, backlit. If you've already located it resting, move to the right position before it starts to move.
Reef sharks: grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks give very clear proximity signals. When a shark describes a wide arc moving away, it's usually about to turn and pass closer again — it's the "inspection" pattern. The mistake is following the shark with the camera while it moves away. The right move is to stay still in position and wait for the return. The photo is in the return, not in the chase.
Mantas at cleaning stations: when a manta arrives at a cleaning station, it describes slow circles above the coral where the cleaner fish wait. That circle is predictable: always in the same direction, always at the same height. You have time to position yourself, adjust the frame and prepare the shot. The mistake is moving while the manta circles. The right move is to place yourself on the axis of the circle and let the manta enter your frame on its own.
Reef fish: reef fish have territories. If you find a moray eel poking out of its crevice, that moray is going to keep poking out — it's not going anywhere. You have time. The mistake is shooting immediately without adjusting position. The right move is taking 30 seconds to find the correct angle, waiting for the animal to relax with your presence and shooting when the position is what you want.
The correct distance by species
There is no universally correct distance for photographing underwater wildlife. There is a specific distance for each species in each context.
Large pelagic wildlife (sharks, mantas, turtles): the approach distance is the one the animal allows — not the one the photographer decides. If you approach and the animal changes direction or accelerates, you have crossed its comfort threshold. Step back — literally — and wait. Animals that feel in control of the distance are animals that stay. Animals that feel pressured leave.
Cryptic wildlife (nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, seahorses): the distance is dictated by the optics, not the animal's behaviour. With macro, the working distance is 5 to 15 centimetres depending on the lens. The challenge is not the animal — it's the photographer's stability at that distance without perfect buoyancy.
Megafauna (whales, orcas, sperm whales): the legal minimum distance varies by country and species, but the photographically correct distance is always greater than it looks from the surface. At two metres from a sperm whale, the photo fails because the angle of view doesn't capture the animal. At ten metres, with an extreme wide-angle, the photo works and the animal is comfortable.
Why the diver's movement matters more than the camera
Animals sense movement before they see you. Water transmits the pressure waves generated by your body at distances far greater than you might imagine.
A diver constantly kicking generates a continuous pressure disturbance that animals detect and avoid. A diver in perfect neutral buoyancy, without unnecessary fin movement, barely disturbs the water — and animals react in a completely different way.
The rule I repeat most in workshops: if you have to kick to maintain position, you are not ready to photograph wildlife. Buoyancy first. Camera second.
This applies especially to:
Cryptic wildlife: small fish detect vibrations. A clumsy photographer stirs up sediment and frightens — the photo disappears.
Megafauna: whales and dolphins are extremely sensitive to human movement in the water. A diver actively swimming toward them pushes them away. One who stays still and lets them approach has real possibilities of a close encounter.
Curious sharks: the rule is the same as with most wild fauna — project calm. Sharks respond to the energy of the environment. A group of agitated divers at the surface pushes sharks away. A group in neutral buoyancy, still, draws them in.
The 6 wildlife scenarios and how to approach each one
Pelagic wildlife — sharks, mantas and turtles
The frame: large pelagic wildlife calls for wide-angle. There is no real alternative if you want to capture the whole animal with context. A 10-17mm on APS-C or 8-15mm on full frame. With a compact, a wide-angle wet lens accessory is essential.
The light: in open pelagic water, natural light is your main ally. Sun from above creates backlight when the animal passes between you and the surface — one of the most powerful compositions in pelagic diving photography. Flash in pelagic water often creates backscatter problems. Learn to work without flash in these situations.
Shutter speed: minimum 1/200s for pelagic wildlife in moderate movement. For attacking sharks or fast-turning schools, 1/500s or above. Motion blur in pelagic wildlife is rarely artistic — it's a technical mistake.
Position: you never chase pelagic wildlife. You position yourself on its route and let it pass. The shark that passes one metre away because you were in its path gives a better photo than the shark retreating because you pursued it.
The moment: in pelagic wildlife, the decisive moment is when the animal is head-on or at a three-quarter angle toward the camera. Side-on is the easy option. Head-on with the eye visible and the body in perspective is the image that makes the difference.
Reef wildlife — moray eels, fish and bottom life
The frame: reef wildlife allows more flexibility. A 60mm macro for portraits of medium-sized fish. Wide-angle for large fish in their reef context. The choice depends on whether you want to tell the story of the animal (wide-angle, with the reef behind) or the portrait of the animal (macro, blurred background).
The light: here the flash starts to take centre stage. In reef floors, natural light loses power quickly — at 15 metres you already need flash fill to recover colour. The key is to use flash as fill light, not as the primary source. If the flash dominates the image, the photo loses naturalness.
Patience: reef wildlife has short but predictable behavioural cycles. A moray eel that enters and exits its crevice does so regularly. A parrotfish that scrapes coral always does it at the same spot. Observe first, shoot second.
The background: in reef wildlife, the background matters as much as the subject. A perfectly camouflaged scorpionfish on red coral is an image. The same fish on boring sand is just a record shot. Before shooting, look at the background that's going to appear behind the subject.
Cryptic wildlife — nudibranchs, ghost pipefish and seahorses
The frame: super macro. This is the speciality where equipment matters most — not because the rest doesn't matter, but because without the right lens or the right diopter, you simply can't get close enough.
Stability: photographing cryptic wildlife at 5-10 centimetres distance without touching the reef requires a level of buoyancy that very few divers have when they start with a camera. It is the most technically demanding scenario for the diver — not for the photographer.
Light: at these distances, natural light doesn't reach the subject well. You need artificial illumination — flash or continuous light — positioned correctly to avoid harsh shadows on such small animals. Ring flash units are especially useful in extreme macro.
Focus: in cryptic wildlife, the animal's eye is the focus point. Always. If the eye is sharp and the rest of the body has some progressive blur, the photo works. If the eye is out of focus, the photo doesn't work regardless of everything else.
Colour background: the background in cryptic macro can be what differentiates one photo from another. A nudibranch on black spiny coral has a completely different background to the same nudibranch on sand. Move around the subject to find the background that best complements the animal's colours.
Bait ball action — bait balls and schools
The most chaotic and most photogenic scenario in diving. A bait ball is literally thousands of fish moving in panic while dozens of predators attack from every angle. The chaos is the setting.
Shutter speed: 1/500s as a minimum. At the moment of a marlin or dolphin attack, 1/1000s. The action is fast — any image with visible movement in the attacking animal is a technical mistake.
Focus: in a bait ball, continuous autofocus is your best ally. The subject changes constantly — there is no time for manual focus. Set the focus area to wide and let it work.
Composition: the classic mistake is trying to capture the "whole" bait ball. The result is a chaotic image with no point of interest. The photo that works shows contrast: the predator entering the mass of prey. A marlin against a dark background entering the silver school. A whale surfacing from below. Look for the contrast, not the total chaos.
The moment: in bait ball photography, burst mode is mandatory. Shoot in burst during attack moments and select afterwards. The perfect bait ball photo is usually frame 8 of a 12-shot burst — impossible to predict, possible to capture.
Position: position yourself slightly below the school, looking upward. Light from above silhouettes the fish and creates the characteristic silver image. Predators attacking from below appear against that bright background.
Megafauna — whales, orcas and sperm whales
The greatest technical challenge and the greatest privilege of the underwater photographer.
Extreme wide-angle: with megafauna there is no alternative but the widest angle your system allows. A 15-metre sperm whale at 3 metres distance doesn't fit in a 35mm frame. You need a fisheye or extreme wide-angle.
Natural light: in megafauna encounters, flash makes no sense — the distances are too great for the light to reach the subject. You work entirely with natural light. This means:
Maximise ISO (accept the noise — it's preferable to camera shake)
Minimum shutter speed 1/200s even in low light
Find the position where the sun illuminates the animal from the side or above
Patience and respect: in megafauna, the correct photo is the one the animal allows, not the one the photographer wants. Getting too close to a whale or actively swimming toward an orca ruins the encounter for everyone — and rarely produces good photos because the animal accelerates. The megafauna photo that works is the one of the animal in its natural behaviour, without visible disturbance.
Scale: in megafauna, including a diver in the frame gives the scale that makes the image impactful. A humpback whale alone is beautiful. The same whale with a diver beside it that looks like a toy is unreal. If you have a dive buddy, coordinate so they appear in the frame when the animal passes.
Nocturnal wildlife — the ocean you don't know
Night diving is the most underused scenario by underwater photographers.
At night, the ocean is a different place. The wildlife that during the day is hidden or still emerges. Octopuses hunt. The colourful fish that during the day were in crevices are now exposed. Nurse sharks, which rest on the bottom during the day, patrol actively. And nocturnal macro life — shrimps, crabs, polychaete worms with their bioluminescence — is a completely different photographic category to daytime.
Lighting: at night you are the only light source. This gives you complete control of the atmosphere that during the day you don't have. You can create dramatic shadows, illuminate only the subject leaving the background black, or use the torch as a paintbrush of light.
Shutter speed: at night the photographer's movement is the biggest problem — without ambient light reference, any camera movement during exposure creates blur. Raise the ISO, keep shutter speed above 1/100s even with flash, and work on buoyancy.
The black background: the absence of ambient light makes the background appear black in the image. This is simultaneously a challenge and an opportunity. Pure black as a background eliminates context — but isolates the subject with a clarity impossible to achieve during the day.
The technique that actually matters
Shutter speed and movement
Shutter speed is the most critical parameter in underwater wildlife photography. More than ISO. More than aperture.
The practical rule:
Completely static wildlife (nudibranchs, sleeping fish): 1/100s sufficient
Slowly moving wildlife (resting turtles, moray eels): 1/125s - 1/200s
Moderately moving wildlife (patrolling sharks, circling mantas): 1/200s - 1/400s
Fast-moving wildlife (schools, attacking sharks): 1/500s - 1/1000s
Bait ball at maximum action: 1/1000s or above
The most frequent mistake is lowering shutter speed to compensate for lack of light. The result is blurred wildlife that no ISO saves in post-production. Better a slightly dark but sharp photo than a perfectly exposed but motion-blurred one.
ISO in dark water or at depth
ISO in underwater photography rises faster than terrestrial photographers are used to. The reason: water absorbs light exponentially with depth, and the dynamic range of underwater scenes is extreme.
Practical guide:
With flash and good ambient light (0-10m): ISO 100-400
With flash at mid-depth (10-20m): ISO 400-800
Without flash in blue water at mid-depth: ISO 800-1600
Nocturnal wildlife or great depth: ISO 1600-6400 depending on the sensor
Digital noise in underwater photos is less visible than in terrestrial photos — the texture of water and coral absorbs some of the visual noise. Accept more ISO than you would on land if the alternative is camera shake or motion-blurred wildlife.
Focus: when manual and when automatic
Continuous autofocus (AF-C or equivalent): for actively moving wildlife — schools, patrolling sharks, mantas at cleaning stations. Let the focus system track the subject and concentrate on framing and timing.
Single autofocus (AF-S or equivalent): for semi-static wildlife — resting turtles, moray eels in their crevice, cryptic wildlife. Focus precisely on the animal's eye, lock the focus and reframe if needed.
Manual: in extreme macro with very small and very static wildlife. The AF of most systems gets confused in extreme macro — it fluctuates between subject and background. Manual gives you complete control of the exact focus point.
The pre-focus trick: with pelagic wildlife that follows predictable routes (circling mantas, sharks returning), pre-focus on the point where you know the animal is going to pass and shoot without readjusting when it arrives. It works better than it sounds.
Lighting as the third element
The most frequent mistake with underwater lighting is treating it as the primary light when it should be fill light.
Natural light creates atmosphere, direction and context. Flash restores colour and eliminates the blue-green cast. When flash dominates the image, the photo loses depth and looks like an aquarium shot. When natural light dominates with flash as fill, the photo has the dimension of the real ocean.
The ratio rule: flash should be between 1 and 2 stops of exposure below ambient light. If ambient light exposes correctly at f/8, the flash should give f/5.6 or f/4. No more.
Flash position: 45 degrees forward of the subject, slightly outward. Never directly above the camera — that flattens the image and creates red-eye in fish. Never directly lateral — that creates harsh shadows. 45 degrees is the balance between natural and artificial light.
Adapt your technique to your current equipment
You don't need a mirrorless with housing to apply everything above. Technique is independent of equipment — what changes is the limit of what you can achieve.
With action cam (GoPro, DJI):Focus on composition and timing — exposure technique is largely automated. Your advantage is mobility. Use it: positions impossible for larger systems, radical angles, inside bait balls where a large system would be cumbersome.
With submersible compact (TG-7 and similar):Macro is where you shine. Apply the entire cryptic wildlife section — this system rivals much more expensive equipment in extreme macro. For pelagic wildlife, the accessory wide-angle wet lens is essential.
With advanced compact + housing:You have real manual control. Start working with specific shutter speeds based on wildlife type. Learn to manage flash as fill light. This system covers all scenarios well except extreme mega-wide-angle.
With mirrorless + professional housing:The limit is no longer the equipment — it's the technique and the reading of animal behaviour. All scenarios in this guide are covered with confidence. The focus now is on the percentage of usable photos per dive.
The most common mistakes — even with good equipment
1. Chasing instead of anticipating. It's the most frequent mistake and the one that ruins the most photos. Remember: position yourself on the animal's route, don't follow it.
2. Shooting immediately. The first position is rarely the best. Before shooting, spend 10-15 seconds adjusting position, framing and parameters. The photo you miss in those seconds wasn't good — the one you get afterwards might be extraordinary.
3. Forgetting the background. A perfect subject on a bad background gives a mediocre photo. Before shooting: what's behind the subject? Can I move to improve that background?
4. Using flash when it's not needed. In clear, shallow water with good natural light, flash can worsen the image — it flattens the lighting and creates casts. Learn to recognise when flash helps and when it's unnecessary.
5. Not adjusting parameters when changing scenario. The correct settings for nudibranchs on the bottom are not correct when a shark suddenly appears three metres away. Many photographers miss the encounter because they didn't adjust shutter speed in time.
6. Ignoring the time of day. Underwater light changes completely between 8am and 2pm. The early hours give spectacular overhead rays in shallow water. Midday gives flatter but more powerful light at depth. Adapt the type of dive to the hour.
7. Not practising in controlled conditions. The pool, the lake, the familiar reef in your area — these are the places to refine technique before applying it at the Mola Mola in Crystal Bay or the bait ball in Mag Bay.
