How to choose your first underwater camera: an honest guide with no sponsors

The question comes sooner or later. After diving a few beautiful sites, watching other divers take photos, watching your memories exist only in your head, the moment arrives: I want a camera to take underwater.


And then you start searching. And you discover that the world of underwater photography is far more complex than it looked from the outside. Cameras at €200 next to systems at €7,000, GoPros promising the impossible, housings that cost more than the camera itself, forums full of contradictory opinions.


I've been doing professional underwater photography for years. I've recommended equipment to students, watched the same mistakes repeat themselves, and learned what the real difference is between what the market sells and what actually improves your photos.


This guide is what I wish I'd read the first time I thought about buying an underwater camera. No sponsored brands, no marketing, no "best of 2026". Just what genuinely works and why.


At the end of this post you'll find my honest opinion and a specific recommendation for someone just starting out in this wonderful world of underwater photography.


Before you buy anything: the question you need to ask yourself


This is the most important question in the entire guide: what do you want to do with that camera?

It's not rhetorical. The answer determines everything. And most divers get it wrong because they confuse two things that aren't the same: what you want to record versus what you want to create.

If you want to document your dives — capture memories, share with friends, make Instagram videos, keep a visual archive of the marine life you've seen — you need something completely different than if you want to create photographic images to print, exhibit, sell or enter into competitions.

Some people start wanting the first and end up obsessed with the second. Others arrive with expectations of the second and realise the first already makes them happy. Neither answer is better — but the camera each type of person needs is completely different.

My advice: start with what you want today, not what you might want in three years. Buying a camera "just in case I progress" is the most expensive trap in the market.

The 4 real categories of underwater camera


Forget the dozens of models you see on websites. There are only 4 real types of underwater camera, and choosing the right type matters far more than choosing a specific model within a type.


Action cam (GoPro, Insta360, DJI and similar)

What it is: a small, robust camera, submersible without additional housing (to a certain depth), with an ultra-wide field of view and primarily focused on video.

Depth without housing: typically 10m (GoPro Hero). With the official housing, up to 60m.

What it does well:

  • High-resolution video with excellent stabilisation

  • Wide, dynamic shots (diving, snorkelling, at the surface)

  • Compact and easy to travel with

  • Accessible entry cost (300-600 €)

What it doesn't do well:

  • Genuinely good photo quality (small sensor, limited dynamic range)

  • Macro (always ultra-wide angle unless you add a macro lens)

  • Low-light performance (the small sensor shows its limits)

  • Serious photographic composition (no real manual controls)

Who it's for: documenting dives, video, vlogging, social content. It is not a camera for serious underwater photography, whatever the marketing says.

Submersible compact (Olympus TG, Sealife and similar)


What it is: a compact camera designed to be waterproof without a housing to 15-20m. With its official housing, it reaches 45-60m.

What it does well:

  • Decent photo and video with some manual control

  • Excellent macro (the TG-7 is one of the best macro underwater cameras on the market at any price)

  • Robust, built for hostile environments

  • Very accessible entry point (450-650 € for the camera, +250-350 € for the housing)

What it doesn't do well:

  • Wide-angle (the fixed lens limits you — unless you add a wide-angle wet lens)

  • Image quality in difficult conditions (sensor is still small)

  • Low light (depth and caves push it — you need careful parameter control and good lighting to get strong results)

Who it's for: the best serious entry point for underwater photography if your interest is macro (nudibranchs, small fish, cryptic life). It's the camera I most often recommend to students starting out seriously.


Advanced compact with underwater housing


What it is: a high-end compact (Sony RX100, Canon G7X) inside a specific underwater housing. The housing adds buttons to access the camera's controls underwater.

What it does well:

  • Image quality clearly superior to the two categories above (1-inch sensor or similar)

  • Full manual control

  • Ability to add accessory wet lenses (macro or wide-angle)

  • Compatible with external strobes

  • Still manageable in size

What it doesn't do well:

  • Lens changes underwater (you're committed to the internal zoom)

  • In extreme conditions (great depths, very fast-moving fauna) the autofocus of compact cameras falls short

Who it's for: the logical next step for someone who has spent a few months with a submersible compact and wants to level up without going mirrorless. Investment of 1,500-3,000 € between camera, housing and accessories.


Mirrorless or DSLR with professional housing


What it is: an APS-C or full-frame camera (Sony A7, Canon R, Nikon Z, Olympus OM-1) inside a professional housing, with the ability to swap ports for different lenses.

What it does well:

  • Professional image quality, no compromises

  • Fast and precise autofocus for moving fauna

  • Swap between macro and wide-angle depending on the day's objective

  • Full compatibility with high-end strobes and lights

  • The system used by serious underwater photographers worldwide

What it doesn't do well:

  • The price. We're talking 3,500-10,000 €+ for a complete system (camera + housing + ports + strobes + arms)

  • Size and weight (travelling with this requires dedicated luggage)

  • The learning curve (not plug and play)

Who it's for: someone who already has many photography dives logged, knows exactly what they want to achieve, and will use the equipment intensively. This is not a first camera. And if it is, you're rushing.


The housing: the piece of equipment you do NOT choose lightly


Here's one of the most misunderstood truths in underwater photography: the housing is as important as the camera. Sometimes more so.

A mediocre housing on an excellent camera gives worse results than a good housing on a modest camera. Here's why:

1. The housing determines what controls you have underwater. If the buttons don't respond, if the exposure dial has play in it, if you can't change the ISO with a glove on — you're finished as a photographer. You'll miss the moment while fighting a broken control.

2. The housing determines which lenses you can use. Every housing has compatible ports. If you plan to do both macro and wide-angle, you need a housing that accepts both port types.

3. The housing determines durability. Cheap plastic housings fail under pressure. Professional anodised aluminium housings last decades with proper care. The difference shows at the first flood.

4. The housing determines resale value. Cameras lose value quickly. Quality housings hold a solid second-hand market for years.

My recommendation: if your budget is tight, a mid-range camera with a quality housing will always outperform a high-end camera in a cheap housing. Every time.

Lighting: the decision that actually changes your photos


If I had to give one single piece of advice to someone buying their first underwater system, it would be this: spend more on lighting than on camera.

Underwater, light changes everything. Beyond 5-7 metres, red disappears. At 15 metres, almost the entire colour spectrum you associate with photography is gone. What you see underwater without artificial light is a blue-green monochromatic version of reality.


The real options are:

No lighting: only valid for action cams and ambient-light photography (silhouettes, wide-angle in clear water, atmosphere). If that's what you want, great. But it severely limits what you can achieve.

Continuous video lights: LED lights that stay on constantly. Useful for video and static macro. Generally more affordable. Range: 150-800 € per light.

Strobes: the serious investment. They fire when you press the shutter, restore real colour, freeze motion, enable compositions impossible with ambient light. They're the boundary between amateur and professional underwater photography. Range: 500-2,500 € per strobe, and you typically use two.

Recommended starting configuration:

  • A single video light (300-500 €): already transforms your photos. The first real quality jump.

  • A pair of small strobes (800-1,200 € for both): if you're serious, this changes everything.

💡 My recommendation: invest in at least one light from day one. The difference between a camera with light and the same camera without light is enormous — far greater than the difference between an 800 € camera and a 2,000 € camera shot without lighting.

How much to invest depending on your level and objectives

The second-hand market for underwater photography is excellent. Quality housings and strobes from serious brands (Nauticam, Ikelite, Inon, Sea&Sea) hold their value and can be found in great condition for 40-60% of the new price. If your budget is tight, this is the way.

The 5 most common mistakes when buying a first camera


1. Starting with the most expensive camera your budget allows. A mirrorless in a housing, without knowing how to compose or light, will give you worse photos than a well-used TG-7. The camera doesn't make the photographer. Practice does.

2. Forgetting the lighting. Buying a 2,000 € camera and no light is a classic mistake. You invest in sensor and end up with flat, blue images. The opposite approach would make far more sense.

3. Not testing the equipment in a pool first. Before your first trip with a new camera, do at least 2-3 pool sessions or dives in familiar waters. You'll learn where the buttons are, how the housing seals, what doesn't work as expected. The first dive with new equipment in real conditions is almost always a photographic disaster.

4. Buying accessories that aren't yours yet. Filters, wet lenses, arms, clamps, macro rings… The market sells a thousand things. Start with the minimum and add based on real need — not FOMO.

5. Not learning to edit. An unedited underwater photo is half a photo. Processing in Lightroom (or equivalent) recovers colour, improves exposure and defines what the water blurs. If you're going to buy a camera, invest in a good underwater editing course at the same time. It will change your results more than any new piece of equipment.


My honest recommendation by diver profile


If you dive occasionally and just want memories:GoPro Hero, Insta360 or DJI (my personal favourite) with the official housing. 400-700 €. Don't overcomplicate it. Enjoy the water and document.


If you'll dive several times a year and want to learn photography seriously:Olympus TG-7 + housing + one video light + a couple of filters. 1,000-1,300 €. It will give you two years of genuine learning before you need anything better.


If you've been diving a while and want to make the jump to serious photographic quality:Sony RX100 VII + Nauticam housing + a pair of small Inon S-2000 strobes. 3,500-4,500 €. A system that lasts, delivers professional results and holds its resale value.


If you're going professional or you're already committed to the big investment:Sony A7 + Nauticam housing + macro and wide-angle ports + two Inon Z-330 strobes + quality arms. 8,000-12,000 €. From here, everything is refinement.
