Mola Mola: the strangest fish in the ocean

There are animals that, when you see them for the first time underwater, take a moment to make sense of.
The Mola Mola is one of those animals.
It doesn't have the shape of a fish. Or rather, it has half the shape of a fish — the front half — and it looks as though someone cut the rest off. No recognisable tail.
No normal caudal fins. Just an enormous head, two vertical fins that move it like a clumsy helicopter, and rough grey skin that looks like worn leather. It is the most improbable animal in the ocean. And it is also one of the most fascinating I have ever seen since I started diving.
The first time I saw one rising slowly from the depths at Crystal Bay was one of those moments that recalibrate your sense of what the ocean is capable of producing. It's not large like a whale. It's not graceful like a manta ray. It's simply… strange.
Extraordinarily, beautifully strange.
This post is for understanding exactly what the Mola Mola is, why it looks the way it does, and where and when you have the best real chances of diving with one.
What exactly is the Mola Mola?
The Mola Mola (Mola mola) is both the scientific name and common name of the oceanic sunfish. It belongs to the order Tetraodontiformes — the same family as pufferfish and porcupinefish, which explains some of its most peculiar characteristics.
The word mola comes from Latin and means "millstone" — a direct reference to its rounded, greyish shape. In English it's called the ocean sunfish because of its habit of lying on its side at the surface, apparently basking in the sun.
There are currently four recognised species in the genus Mola, though Mola mola is by far the most well-known and studied. It inhabits all temperate and tropical oceans of the world, from the surface down to depths exceeding 600 metres.
A biology designed to surprise
The heaviest bony fish in the world
The Mola Mola holds a record shared with its relatives: it is the heaviest bony fish in the world. Adult specimens can weigh between 250 and 1,000 kilograms, with documented cases exceeding two tonnes. The fin-to-fin length — from dorsal to anal fin — can exceed 3 metres.
To put it in context: you're looking at a fish that can weigh more than a small car.
And yet it moves that mass with a strange, almost hypnotic elegance. The dorsal and anal fins are long and rigid, and it moves them synchronously like two oars. It doesn't swim — it propels itself. Slowly, with a dignity that seems entirely at odds with its appearance.
Without a tail (almost)
The Mola Mola has no caudal fin in the conventional sense. What appears to be the rear of the animal is actually a structure called the clavus — a skin fold that formed evolutionarily from the fusion of the rear dorsal and anal fins.
It is, literally, a fish that evolution decided to remove the tail from. The reason isn't entirely clear — probably related to a specialisation towards pelagic life and deep-water feeding that made rapid caudal propulsion unnecessary.
The result is an animal that looks incomplete, as though it's missing its back half. The informal English term "half-fish" exists, though it's unfair: the Mola Mola is perfectly adapted to its ecological niche. It just happens that that niche has shapes we don't recognise as "normal fish".
Parasites and cleaning stations
The Mola Mola has one of the richest parasite ecosystems of any known vertebrate. More than 40 distinct species of parasites have been documented living in its skin, gills and internal organs.
To combat them, the Mola Mola does something extraordinary: it seeks out cleaning stations. Reef zones where cleaner fish — primarily wrasses — remove parasites from its skin. The animal approaches calmly, adopts a specific posture (generally vertical or slightly tilted) and allows the cleaner fish to work.
This is why the Mola Mola rises to shallow water at Crystal Bay and other cleaning stations around Nusa Penida. It doesn't come to the surface on a whim — it comes to be cleaned. That process is what makes the encounter possible for us.
Beyond reef cleaning stations, the Mola Mola also uses another method: leaping out of the water at great height and falling sideways onto the surface. The impact stuns and dislodges the larger parasites from its skin. A 500kg animal jumping clear of the water is one of the most improbable spectacles in the ocean.
The most prolific reproduction in the ocean
The Mola Mola produces more eggs than any other known vertebrate. A female can lay up to 300 million eggs in a single reproductive season.
It's an extreme example of r-strategy reproduction — many eggs, minimal investment per offspring, extremely high early mortality. Of those 300 million eggs, the vast majority will never reach adulthood. Those that do, however, have an estimated lifespan of several decades.
Mola Mola juveniles are tiny — just a few millimetres — and have normal caudal fins and spines like pufferfish. At some point during growth, that structure transforms radically into the adult animal we recognise. It's one of the most dramatic metamorphoses in the animal kingdom.
Why it rises to shallow water
The Mola Mola spends most of its life in deep, cold water, hunting jellyfish, squid and small fish. It can dive to more than 600 metres, where water temperature can be close to 4°C.
After those deep dives, the animal needs to warm its body temperature to maintain optimal central nervous system function. It does this by ascending to warm, shallow water — sometimes lying on its side at the surface directly under the sun.
This cycle — deep dives to hunt, ascents to warm up and visit cleaning stations — is what makes it predictable at specific locations like Crystal Bay. The animal rises because it needs to. We wait for it because we know when and where.
Where to dive with Mola Mola in the world
Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida (Bali) — the best in the world
Crystal Bay is the global mecca for Mola Mola encounters. No other site on the planet offers comparable concentration and frequency of sightings during peak season.
The geographical reason is clear: Nusa Penida sits at the confluence of currents between the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean. Those currents bring cold, deep water to the surface — a phenomenon called upwelling — which creates exactly the thermocline conditions the Mola Mola uses to rise for cleaning and warming.
Season: the optimal window is July to October, peaking in August and September. Outside this period sightings are possible but far less frequent.
Sighting depth: generally between 15 and 30 metres, though they can appear shallower. The thermocline typically sits between 18 and 25 metres — that's where the probability is highest.
Conditions: Crystal Bay has currents that can be strong and unpredictable. The water can drop to 18-20°C during Mola Mola season. Bring a 5mm wetsuit and hood. Minimum recommended level is Advanced Open Water with current experience — this is not a site for a newly certified Open Water diver.
An honest note: the sighting is never guaranteed. The Mola Mola doesn't follow a schedule. Some days several individuals appear; other days, none at all. Most serious expeditions combine Crystal Bay with other Nusa Penida sites to maximise the chances without depending on a single encounter.
Other destinations
Sardinia, the Balearic Islands or La Herradura (Mediterranean): sporadic sightings in summer, especially at the surface
Azores: occasional encounters in pelagic waters
California and Baja California coast: present but difficult to predict
New Zealand and southern Australia: one of the highest concentrations in the southern hemisphere, though less visited
None of these destinations offer the predictability of Crystal Bay in season. For diving with Mola Mola with reasonable sighting assurance, Nusa Penida in August-September is the only real option in the world.
What the encounter is actually like
Diving with Mola Mola at Crystal Bay has a specific dynamic worth understanding before you go.
You descend with the group to the depth of the thermocline. The water temperature changes in seconds — from 26°C to 20°C or less. There you wait, horizontal, still, without kicking.
The Mola Mola appears from the depths. Not quickly — the animal moves slowly, with that synchronised fin propulsion that looks like a clockwork mechanism. It might be one. It might be three or four. On good days, several individuals take turns at the cleaning station throughout the dive.
What strikes you most is not the size — though it is imposing. It's the behaviour. The animal doesn't flee. It approaches. It looks at you with those round eyes that always seem surprised. It stays. And in that moment you understand that you're in the presence of an animal that has been doing exactly this for millions of years — rising to be cleaned, warming up, returning to the depths — and that your presence is barely a minor curiosity in its routine.
A typical encounter lasts between 5 and 20 minutes before the animal decides to descend. There's no way to extend it. When the Mola Mola decides to leave, it leaves.
For underwater photography: wide-angle is the obvious choice given the animal's size. But macro has its opportunities too — the skin texture and the cleaner fish at work on it make extraordinary images. Bring both options if you can.
Conservation: the Mola Mola's silent threat
The Mola Mola is listed on the IUCN Red List as "Vulnerable" — a category that is often misunderstood. It doesn't mean the species is relatively safe. It means it faces a high risk of extinction if current pressures continue.
The main threats:
Bycatch: the Mola Mola is one of the species most frequently caught accidentally by trawl nets and longlines worldwide. It's not the target of directed fishing in most countries, but it dies trapped in nets intended for tuna, swordfish and other species. It is estimated to be the most common bycatch species in some North Atlantic fisheries.
Plastics: the Mola Mola feeds primarily on jellyfish. Plastic bags in the ocean are indistinguishable from jellyfish to the animal. Plastic ingestion causes intestinal blockages and death. It is one of the vertebrates most affected by ocean plastic pollution.
Ocean warming: the reduction of jellyfish and squid populations in many zones, combined with the displacement of the cold currents the animal depends on, is changing its distribution and behaviour.
Diving with Mola Mola in Bali with Born to the Ocean
