Orcas and dolphins in captivity: what the science says about the marine park business

There is an image millions of people have burned into their childhood memory.
An orca leaping over the water of a turquoise tank, splashing the front rows of an applauding audience. Cheerful music. A trainer riding on the animal's back. The feeling of having witnessed something magical.
What that image doesn't show is what happens the other 23 hours of the day.
The same animal swimming in circles in a space that, compared to its natural range, is the equivalent of a person spending their entire life in a bathtub.
Without the dozens of kilometres it would cover every day in the wild. Without the complex family structure that defines its existence. Without the deep dives its entire body is built for.
There are currently more than 3,500 cetaceans — dolphins, orcas, belugas and other species — living in concrete tanks or artificial lagoons across roughly 350 marine parks, zoos and military facilities spread across 50 countries. Most are bottlenose dolphins.
But there are also orcas, belugas, pilot whales and several other species.
This post is not an emotional attack with no basis. It is a review of what published, peer-reviewed, recent science says about what happens to these animals in captivity.
And about the business that sustains that system under the banner of education and conservation.
What a cetacean needs — and what a tank can never give it
To understand the problem, you first need to understand the animal.
Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family. In the wild they travel up to 65 kilometres a day. They repeatedly dive to depths beyond 150 metres.
They live in matrilineal family groups — stable social structures led by the eldest female of the pod, some of which remain together for the entire lives of their members.
Their brain is larger than a human's in absolute terms, with particularly sophisticated development in areas related to emotional and social processing.
Bottlenose dolphins also live in complex, fluid social structures, with bonds that last for years, communication through individual signature whistles that function almost like names, and a range that in the wild can span hundreds of square kilometres.
No tank at any marine park — however large compared to a domestic swimming pool — comes remotely close to what these animals need to express their natural behaviour.
The National Aquarium in the US estimated that the largest orca tank in the world represents roughly one ten-millionth of the space an orca would cover in a normal day in the wild.
What the science documents: the body that doesn't lie
When science examines cetaceans in captivity, it doesn't examine opinions. It examines bodies. And the bodies tell a consistent story.
Collapsed dorsal fin: the most visible mark
Virtually every adult male orca in captivity develops what is known as dorsal fin collapse — the fin, instead of standing upright, bends to one side until it falls over completely. In the wild, this is observed in roughly 1% of males, generally linked to injury or illness.
The scientific explanation has two parts. First, orcas in captivity spend far more time at the surface than in the wild — without the constant support of swimming at depth and in straight lines at high speed, the cartilage of the fin, which in an adult male can exceed a metre in height, loses structural support and bends under its own weight. Second, reduced activity in the tank affects circulation and the supporting musculature of the fin.
This is not a cosmetic defect. It is the visible physical record of a life without the movement the animal is built for.
Severe dental problems
Studies document that a very high proportion of orcas and dolphins in captivity develop serious dental damage — some analyses put the figure as high as 70% with some form of deterioration.
The cause: animals repeatedly biting the metal bars or concrete walls of the tank, a behaviour associated with frustration and chronic stress.
To prevent infections arising from that damaged dentition, it is common practice at some parks to drill the teeth without sealing them, requiring daily flushing and, in many cases, prolonged antibiotic treatment. That constant exposure to antibiotics has led to resistant strains that have been the direct cause of death in several documented captive animals.
Drastically shorter lifespan
This is probably the single most damning piece of data.
In the wild, orcas commonly live between 50 and 80 years. Of the roughly 70 orcas born in captivity between 1977 and 2019, none has lived past 30 years. The death rate for captive orcas is 2.5 times higher than for wild populations.
The pattern repeats with bottlenose dolphins. An analysis of records from the international Ceta-Base database found that average survival in captivity for bottlenose dolphins who lived past their first year was just 12 years and 9 months — compared to the 30 to 50 years they live in the wild.
And more troubling still: 52% of bottlenose dolphins born in captivity don't survive past their first year, an infant mortality rate far higher than in wild populations.
Behaviours science classifies as signs of psychological suffering
A study published in 2025 in the scientific journal PeerJ, authored by researchers specialising in cetacean welfare, provides a comprehensive review of what is known about the suffering of these animals in captivity.
Among the findings:
Repetitive stereotypic behaviours: swimming in constant circles, floating motionless at the surface for hours, compulsively biting tank structures. These behaviours are widely recognised in ethology as indicators of chronic stress and lack of stimulation — the equivalent, in primates or other captive mammals, of what is termed abnormal repetitive behaviour.
Unusual aggression: fights between individuals sharing the same tank, bite marks between animals that in the wild rarely attack one another in this way. Forced coexistence between individuals that would not naturally choose to associate generates social tensions that don't exist within wild family structures.
Documented cases of aggression toward humans: there are virtually no recorded orca attacks on humans in the wild. In captivity, several trainer deaths have been documented — the best-known case being the orca Tilikum, responsible for three fatalities, whose story inspired the documentary that shifted public perception of this business.
Disruption of maternal bonds: cases have been documented of captive mothers rejecting or even attacking their own calves — an exceptional behaviour in wild populations, where the mother-calf bond is one of the pillars of the species' social structure.
The business behind the "conservation" argument
Here lies the core of the problem. For decades, marine parks have built a narrative: what they do is research, education, species conservation.
The economic reality tells a different story.
The vast majority of cetaceans currently in captivity were not rescued from a situation of danger, nor are they part of programmes for reintroduction into their natural habitat.
They are the result of captive breeding programmes designed exclusively to sustain the number of animals available for shows.
No captive orca breeding programme has ever reintroduced a single individual into its natural habitat.
The "scientific research" that parks cite as justification is limited, in most cases, to studies of the animal's own behaviour in captivity — information with limited scientific value precisely because it describes behaviour altered by artificial conditions, not the species' natural behaviour in its habitat.
And "education" rests largely on the show itself: the training of jumps and tricks the animal performs in exchange for food, presented to the public as natural behaviour when it is in fact a conditioned repertoire built for entertainment.
The case that put this at the centre of the debate in 2026
In June 2026, a case that perfectly captures the tension between animal welfare and business made international headlines.
France passed a law in 2021 banning the breeding and keeping of cetaceans in captivity for entertainment, coming into force at the end of 2026. The Marineland Antibes park on the French Riviera closed in 2025 as a result of that legislation. Its two orcas — born at the park itself and having spent their entire lives in concrete tanks — along with twelve dolphins, needed a destination.
A court-appointed team of experts found in February 2026 that the concrete tanks where the orcas lived were in advanced structural decline, and that if the animals weren't moved soon they might have to be euthanised.
The option the French government ultimately chose was not a marine sanctuary — the kind of facility in protected natural waters that animal welfare organisations have spent years calling for as a genuine alternative to tanks. It was to send the orcas to another entertainment park, this time in Spain.
Animal protection organisations have criticised this transfer as contradicting the spirit of France's own law, warning that the animals will very likely continue to be used in shows and breeding programmes — precisely what the legislation was meant to end.
It is the perfect example of how, even as the law advances, the business finds a way to continue. Moving the animal from one tank to another, in another country, is still business. It is not a solution — it is a relocation of the same problem.
What actually works: marine sanctuaries
The real alternative to concrete tanks exists and has growing scientific backing.
Marine sanctuaries are enclosed spaces within natural bays or coves, with real seawater, real currents, real depth, and vastly more surface area than any artificial tank — while still allowing for veterinary care and controlled feeding for animals that, after years in captivity, cannot be safely reintroduced to fully wild life.
In May 2025, an international team of cetacean welfare researchers published, in the scientific journal PLOS Biology, the first accreditation guidelines for genuine marine sanctuaries — a framework that for the first time establishes clear standards for what actually constitutes a dignified rehabilitation space, as opposed to the "sanctuary" marketing some parks have begun using without changing their actual conditions.
Projects such as the whale sanctuary under construction off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, or the refuge for non-releasable dolphins developed in Taranto, Italy, represent the model that animal welfare science points to as the real future for cetaceans that can no longer return to the open ocean.
Legislation is also advancing, though unevenly. France, with its 2021 law. Canada, with its 2019 ban on breeding and using cetaceans in captivity for pure entertainment.
The United States has a federal bill aimed at phasing out captive cetacean entertainment, reintroduced several times without yet achieving final passage.
The problem is that, while legislation advances country by country, the business remains legal in most of the 50 countries where it operates — and animals, as the French case shows, simply move from a more restrictive jurisdiction to a more permissive one.
What you can do
Don't visit marine parks with cetacean shows.
It is the most direct individual decision with the greatest real impact. The captive cetacean business exists because it generates ticket revenue. Every ticket not bought is an economic signal.
Distinguish between an aquarium and a show.
Not all aquariums are the same. Some centres do genuine rehabilitation work with injured or stranded marine wildlife, without shows, without training for tricks, with the real goal of returning the animal to the sea when possible. Look into any facility that keeps cetaceans before visiting.
Support organisations working on real sanctuaries.
Projects like the Whale Sanctuary Project or Dolphin Project have spent years working on real alternatives and need support — financial, in awareness, in political pressure.
Choose to see cetaceans where they belong: in the wild.
Responsible whale, dolphin and orca watching in their natural habitat — with operators who respect distances, without chasing or harassing the animals — is the right way to have that encounter. It is also, for anyone who has experienced it, an incomparably more powerful experience than watching the same animal perform tricks in a concrete tank.
Talk about it.
Many people who take their children to a marine park don't know this data — they simply grew up thinking that was the normal way to see these animals. A fact shared with care, without condescension, can change someone's next decision.
The difference of seeing an orca where it belongs
I've had the good fortune to dive with marine wildlife in the wild in many corners of the planet. And there is something that feels different when the encounter happens on the animal's own terms, in its own territory, with no human control over its behaviour.
An orca hunting in a Norwegian fjord with its family clan, executing a hunting technique perfected over generations, has nothing to do with the same species jumping for a fish in a concrete tank.
It isn't only an ethical question — the real experience is simply, incomparably more powerful. Because what you're watching is true.
